Bailey Wine Co was established by Tim Bailey in late 2015.
After 19 years and 20 vintages Tim decided to take the plunge and start making his own booze.
The inspiration came from some wines tasted early in his winemaking career such as the famous Leo Buring "Leonay" Riesling's and Mt Langi Ghiran Shiraz.
The philosophy is simple "find great growers in the regions we love and let the vineyard shine through in the bottle". This initially led us to the famous Clare Valley sub region Watervale and the Grampians region of Western Victoria.
We have been fortunate enough to source fruit from two outstanding growers in each region.
Our Watervale Riesling comes from the Bryksy Family (pronounced Bryk-sy) who grow grapes on the Hill just to the north of the Watervale township itself.
We are fortunate enough to be allowed access to the best Riesling on this block which makes life very easy.
Greg Bryksy is responsible for the Viticulture and you would be hard pressed to find a more diligent grower in the Clare Valley.

Our Grampians Shiraz comes from the Hyde Park vineyard which is about 4km south west of the historic township of Great Western. We take our Shiraz from the Dalberti Block which is West Facing.
Robin Kuchel is responsible for viticulture here and is very much in tune with his site. His attention to detail is second to none and as a result we get some wonderful fruit to play with.

2016 Bailey Wine Co Grampians Shiraz
We chose the Grampians region of Western Victoria for our Shiraz as we love what the region has to offer when it comes to this variety. The Grampians region provides a lovely perfume and spice to the aroma profile of the fruit whilst having an abundance of red and black fruits on a medium bodied palate.
We source our fruit from the Hyde Park vineyard which is approximately 10km south of Great Western.
The 2016 Vintage provided a very quick ripening window and we took our Shiraz off whilst it still was in the "fresh" fruit zone and the resulting wine has some wonderful mulberry and blackberry fruit.
This Shiraz is very deep red in colour with purple hues, it has a very attractive nose of fresh mulberry and blackberry fruit with some spicy oak providing subtlesupport. The palate is medium in body and shows clean fresh vibrant dark fruits and some chocolate with fine tannins giving support to the long finish.

2017 Punch Down Boys Field Blend
This wine is a joint venture with Dan Redman.
Tim and Dan were contemplating Coonawarra Cabernet over a beer after a tasting and a thought ran through their minds....young Cabernet...it was a lightbulb moment !
The boys talked about how good young Cabernet can look with its deep but vibrant colour, perfumed aromas and juicy buoyant sweet fruit and the fact no one can see it !!
So they thought why not...they grabbed some Cabernet, a little bit of Shiraz, some Cab Franc and chucked it into a picking bin...the rules being no additions whatsoever and punchdown's only twice a day.
The fruit was sourced from Bendt and Kate Rasmussen's vineyard and Redman Wines vineyards.
The 2017 Vintage provided a long cool ripening season which suited the project down to the ground. The boys were presented with ripe flavours at 12.5 Baume so they jumped..
The wine was pressed after 7 days to older oak and bottled after 3 months via gravity and no filtration. Only a small amount of SO2 was used at bottling for fruit preservation.
The end result is a vibrant expression of Coonawarra Claret..Red vibrant fruits with some interesting spicy components in the background, the palate is soft sweet and juicy with some crunchiness provided by the stalk components. The wine is very drinkable now so break the rules don't cellar it and drink it young !

Very light colour and a refined, undeveloped, fresh and youthful aroma, with hints of lemon and passionfruit, the palate delicate, racy and crisp with lively acidity and a dry, mouthwatering finish and aftertaste. This will reward cellaring. 2017-04-15

Bryksy Vineyard seems to be getting some attention, well at least now Knappstein and the Bailey family have put it on their front labels. Tim Bailey is the winemaker here. You might know him from Leconfield, Coonawarra.
Take a picture and slap it in the encyclopaedia next to Clare Valley Riesling. Bickfords lime coridal, lemon curd, faint steel/slate scents, good couple of sprigs of honeysuckle flowers, a touch of aromatic yeastiness just set aside. Palate is racy, mouthwatering, ultra tangy with citrusy acidity and a crisp, green apple juice crunch to finish. Bright, flavoursome, refreshing, with some pent up, coiled intensity to keep it cellar friendly a while. Nicely done.

Clare Valley, six hours away. Chalky, lime
dominant nose with some sea spray and light
floral notes. The wine is fermented dry yet oozes
personality when so many young Clare Valley
wines can be austere.

Royal Melbourne Wine awards 2016
We are very pleased to announce in our first wine show ever we received a 92 point silver medal at the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards for our 2016 Watervale Riesling. It was in Class 13 which was the 2016 Riesling class. The judges comments were "Great line and flow" For those that don't know about shows 92 points means it would have been judged as a 95 point gold initially then pointed down in the gold judging afterwards. We think this is a mighty fine effort first up and puts us in some fine company when it comes to 2016 Riesling.
